Lessons (4)

This lesson allows students to learn what bar graphs are used for, how to interpret the data presented, and how to organize their own data using bar graphs.

Audiences: Grades 3-5

Primary Subjects: Statistics

Related Topics: bar graph, categorical, circles, counting, data, squares, statistics, triangle

This lesson will challenge students to think creatively by having them design and build water balloon catchers from random scrap materials, while requiring them to take into consideration a multitude of variables. Students will then construct at least two bar graphs to be used in a commercial advocating the purchase of their group's catcher.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8

Primary Subjects: Statistics

Related Topics: bar graph, counting, data, graph, histogram, intervals, lines, mean, median, mode, pie chart, probability, range, skewed distribution, standard deviation, statistics

This lesson teaches students about theoretical and experimental probability through a series of work stations.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8

Primary Subjects: Discrete, Probability

Related Topics: bar graph, conditional probability, events, experimental probability, fair, fractions, geometric probability, monty hall, outcomes, percents, probability, probability simulation, probability with replacement, random number, spinner, theoretical probability, trials

Students learn about probability by predicting the outcome of planned experiments and playing racing games.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8

Primary Subjects: Discrete, Probability

Related Topics: data, events, experimental probability, fair, fractions, outcomes, percents, probability, probability simulation, theoretical probability, trials

Activities (5)

Students run a simulation of how a fire will spread through a stand of trees, learning about probability and chaos. Parameters: Forest density, wind direction, size of forest.

Audiences: Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, Undergraduate

Primary Subjects: Discrete, Fractions, Modeling, Probability

Related Topics: agent modeling, chaos, conditional probability, experimental probability, iteration, percentages, percents, probability simulation, proportion, simulation, skewed distribution, variance

Sort colored shapes into a bar graph. Practice sorting by shape or by color. Appropriate for elementary grades. Bar Graph Sorter is one of the Interactivate assessment explorers.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8

Primary Subjects: Geometry, Graphs, Statistics

Related Topics: bar graph, circles, counting, sorter, squares, statistics

Experiment with probability using a fixed size section spinner, a variable section spinner, two regular 6-sided dice or customized dice.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12

Primary Subjects: Discrete, Probability, Statistics

Related Topics: circles, events, experimental probability, fair, fractions, geometric probability, outcomes, percentages, probability simulation, random number, simulation, spinner, statistics, theoretical probability, theoretical value, trials

Run a simulation of how a fire will spread through a stand of trees, learning about probability and chaos. Parameters: Probability that a tree catches fire if its neighbor is on fire.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12

Primary Subjects: Discrete, Fractions, Modeling, Probability

Related Topics: agent modeling, chaos, decimals, events, experimental probability, outcomes, percentages, percents, proportion, simulation, squares, theoretical probability, variance

Graph ordered pairs and customize the graph title and axis labels. Points are connected from left to right, rather than being connected in the order they are entered.

Audiences: Grades 3-5, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, Undergraduate

Primary Subjects: Algebra, Graphs, Statistics

Related Topics: cartesian coordinate, coordinate, coordinate plane, data plot, graph, statistics
